Studio Ghibli’s Illuminated ‘Castle in the Sky’ Ship in Tokyo
Perched in the sky fifty-two storeys above Tokyo, a new exhibition marks a thirty-year retrospective of Studio Ghibli, the animation studio behind Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. The centrepiece of the Studio Ghibli Expo is a room filled with airships from the films, dominated by a large illuminated replica of the ship from Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky.
Ghibli’s machines have always been characters rather than props — lovingly over-engineered, faintly impractical, deeply desirable — and building one at that scale in a tower above the city is the right way to honour them. It is a fan exhibition with genuine scenography behind it.
