The Storybook GIFs of ‘Sparrows’

An anonymous illustrator working under the pseudonym Sparrows has been sharing a series of imaginative GIFs that regularly catch fire on Tumblr. Each one is a small act of magical realism: pelicans playing scrabble, tattoos blooming out of skin, breakfasts that appear to cook themselves.

Sparrows works professionally as an illustrator, but these brief standalone pieces are ideas she wants to exist outside her head — snapshots that feel as though they belong to one small universe without forming part of a larger narrative. The format suits them exactly. A GIF is short enough to be a throwaway and precise enough to be a punchline, and these land every time.
