Suspended Tree Sculptures Connect an Artist to His Cuban Roots

A tree floats against a pale grey ground. Where the canopy should be, a small house sits on the trunk, its dark roof and bare twigs carrying a few leaves. Below, the trunk splits into a long tangle of fine roots that hang down and end in mid-air.

Nothing holds it up. There is no ground and no visible support.

Jorge Mayet builds these from paper, wire, fabric and acrylics; one, ‘Espiritual conexion’ (2012), measures 17.7 x 39.3 x 19.6 inch.
