Alexa Meade’s Reverse Trompe l’Oeil Paintings
Alexa Meade flattens three-dimensional installations into two-dimensional images. She covers models in carefully applied paint, concentrating on painted shadow and highlight until a photograph of the sitter reads as a painting — a process she has called “reverse trompe l’oeil”.
The work spans installation, painting, photography and performance, and most of it is done live, with very little room for error. Meade treats the errors as the point: “Having to problem solve in the moment and hack together a solution will typically result in me bringing something new and fresh to the painting that I didn’t intend or expect.” Her medium has interests, personalities and needs of its own — canvas does not.
