Rafael Araujo’s Golden Ratio Coloring Book

Rafael Araujo draws three-dimensional space in a studio entirely without technology, working by hand to show the golden ratio’s part in the natural world. “I was 15 when I started noticing intelligent patterns in the world of nature — spirals, sequences, proportions,” he says. “Everything I draw is by hand. I don’t use a computer, just a pencil, compass, and a protractor.”

He has spent forty years refining the process, and the Golden Ratio Coloring Book — funded on Kickstarter, with video documentation of the method — is an attempt to pass on the meditative quality of that work. It is a colouring book in which the line work is the argument: logarithmic spirals built from concentric circles and a scaffolding of straight edges, precise enough to read as a geometric proof and open enough to invite you in.
