Matt W. Moore’s Mandalas of Foraged Wood and Stone

The graphic designer Matt W. Moore has always been drawn to the infinite possibilities of the mandala, spending years producing graphically-oriented grids on canvas and on walls. When the chance came to take an artist residency in Eden, Utah, he decided to reconsider the motif using material gathered on the mountain and in the nearby valley.

Moving from ink to foraged wood and river stones does something useful to the form: it forces the symmetry to negotiate with irregular material, so the geometry stops being decorative and starts being an argument. The MWM Graphics mandala archive is worth an hour.
