The Penny Arcade Video for Jane Bordeaux’s ‘Ma’agalim’
The animated video for Jane Bordeaux’s Ma’agalim drops you inside a contraption inspired by an old penny arcade device, housing a perpetually moving landscape in which people go about their daily lives. The folk-country trio’s track is lovely; the film is the reason to stop what you are doing.
Every frame is warm with mid-century illustration — pastel buildings, terrain rolling and curving into paths and fields, figures with a claylike smoothness — and the attention to colour and texture is the giveaway that the director, Uri Lotan, came out of Pixar and Disney. The whole thing is a diorama with a life of its own.
