Inside Nix+Gerber’s Post-Apocalyptic Studio
Since 2005, the artist Lori Nix and her partner Kathleen Gerber have been producing dioramas of post-apocalyptic environments: libraries, laundrettes and hotel lobbies quietly handed back to nature. Almost everything in the scenes is fabricated by the two of them under the name Nix+Gerber, with each taking months.
A short film on the practice is the point of this post, because the illusion is the least interesting part. What is remarkable is the labour — the sheer fabrication behind a single photograph — and the patience of two people making ruins of rooms that never existed.
