Meg Hitchcock’s Text Drawings Made From Religious Script
It has been a while since Meg Hitchcock’s work last appeared here. She was first covered in 2011, when she spent 135 hours gluing tens of thousands of individual letters cut from the Koran in order to transcribe the Book of Revelation. She has kept going: religious texts dissected letter by letter, punctuation and spacing stripped out, so that the reader is discouraged from taking the words literally.
Lately the drawings have turned figural, forming feet, scarves and niqabs from thousands of sourced characters. “The labour-intensive aspect of my work is a meditation practice as well as an exploration of the various forms of devotion,” Hitchcock says. Her work gathers texts across faiths and arrives, in the end, at an argument about what any holy word actually is: a sublime expression of shared humanity.
