James Lewis’s Hand Lettering on Kraft Paper

James Lewis’s lettering is deceptively simple. The phrase Hand Lettering arrives as large, flowing cursive in opaque white, laid on the warm brown of a sheet of kraft paper, and it reads as though it were drawn with a flexible dip nib.

It was not. The tool rests beside the word — a white Uni Posca paint marker, black barrel, red logo — and that honesty is the nicest thing about the composition. Flourished capitals, sweeping descenders, a small sans-serif line below, and no attempt to pretend the medium is anything other than a marker on wrapping paper.
