Yi-Hsuan Li’s Design for ‘First Class of Taiwan History’
First Class of Taiwan History was written by the historian Su Beng, who wanted readers to come away with a deeper understanding of the island’s past. Yi-Hsuan Li’s job was to make a history book look like something people would actually pick up.
The solution is illustration. The design leans on drawn matter rather than the stock-photo-and-caption grammar that most history publishing defaults to, on the theory that curiosity is a design problem. Worth studying if you have ever watched a good book get ignored because of its cover.
